Village Hall Building Survey Leads to Accessible Toilet Upgrade
– Without a £100,000 Extension
Last year, we carried out a pro bono Level 3 village hall building survey for Allerston Village Hall in North Yorkshire (Inspection 9th May 2025) Level3Survey_Allerston Village …
.
Like many traditional community buildings, the hall was structurally sound but struggling with outdated facilities — particularly external toilets and no disabled access WC.
For over 30 years, the committee had wanted to install an accessible toilet. Previous proposals suggested an extension costing around £100,000, making the project unrealistic for a small rural hall dependent on fundraising and grant support.
Community Building Refurbishment Advice That Saved £70,000
During the building survey, we did what we always aim to do — look beyond defects.
Yes, we identified maintenance items:
- Valley gutter clearance
- Lime repointing to stonework
- Ventilation improvements
- Electrical certification checks
However, the key opportunity lay in the internal layout.
Our community building refurbishment advice was simple but strategic:
Reduce the oversized kitchen and reconfigure the internal space to create a fully accessible indoor WC — within the existing footprint.
No extension. No costly new structure. Just intelligent use of the building.
Accessible Toilet Grant Funding – A Realistic Project
By adopting this approach, the committee were able to:
- Install a disabled access toilet inside the main building
- Upgrade the kitchen simultaneously
- Improve hygiene, accessibility and safeguarding
- Increase the building’s lettings potential
- Secure accessible toilet grant funding
- Deliver the entire project for approximately £30,000
That represents a saving of roughly £70,000 compared with earlier extension proposals.
Kay and I attended the grand opening in February — complete with tea and cake — and it was fantastic to see a practical, affordable solution benefiting the whole village.
Why a Village Hall Building Survey Should Go Beyond Defects
A professional village hall building survey should not just list problems. It should:
- Assess structural condition
- Identify risks
- Understand traditional construction
- Consider long-term usability
- Suggest cost-effective improvement strategies
Community buildings must now meet modern expectations around:
- Accessibility
- Energy efficiency
- Safe internal sanitary provision
- Year-round comfort
With the new accessible toilet and improved facilities, Allerston Village Hall is now far more attractive to user groups — from yoga classes to community events — ensuring greater income stability and long-term sustainability.
